The iOS 11 introduces a handy feature to identify QR codes through the Camera’s viewfinder. Now the iOS 12 is coming soon, and you will have more shortcuts to scan QR codes, like via the new Control Center or through the 3D Touch gesture.
In the upcoming iOS 12, Apple brings a new way to customize QR code scanning. If you have installed the public beta of iOS 12 on your iPhone/iPad, you can take advantage of the customized Control Center to scan QR codes more quickly.
Before that, if you have not tried the QR code scanning feature on your iOS 11 device, you can enable this feature by toggling Scan QR Codes on via the Settings > Camera. Once it is enabled, every time you open up the built-in camera and the viewfinder identifies any QR code, a notification will pop up asking you to open the link associated with the QR code in Safari browser. But if you are upset by this kind of notification, you can disable the feature for a period, and re-enable it when needed.
iOS 12 allows users to launch the QR code scanner right from the Control Center, even if you have not enabled the QR code scanning option in Settings > Camera.
- Open up the Settings app on your device that is running iOS 12.
- Choose Control Center from the list, and then tap Customize Controls option.
- Under the More Controls heading, tap the little green plus symbol next to Scan QR Code, to add this shortcut to the Include list above. Then you can move it up or down to adjust the order in the list and also the icon place in Control Center.
After that, you can bring out the Control Center from the screen of your iOS device, and tap Scan QR Code icon, to launch the Camera app and start the scanning.
So that’s how you invoke the QR scanner via the Control Center. Meanwhile, iOS also adds the QR code scanning option into the 3D Touch shortcuts in Camera app. If your iPhone has a 3D Touch-enabled display (iPhone 6s or later), you can press the Camera icon on the screen, and select the Scan QR Code option from the shortcuts menu.
On July 9 Apple released the iOS 11.4.1, mainly focusing on bug fixes and stability improvements. Previously many users reported that the battery on their iPhones drop down steeply after the upgrade to iOS 11.4. Not sure if this issue has been fixed in iOS 11.4.1.
